Quality Assurance (QA) |
A process designed to provide confidence that the quality control program is being applied effectively. The process includes an auditing procedure designed to evaluate all known policies and procedures that affect the quality of results.
Quality Control (QC) |
A program comprised of the operational procedures to ensure that data are of known and acceptable precision and accuracy.
Removal |
all operations where Lead Based Paint is removed or stripped from structures of substrates including Demolition.
Renovation |
the modifying of any existing structure, facility, or portion thereof.
Replacement |
Removal of an entire building Component coated with Lead Based Paint and replacing it with a lead free Component.
Response action |
Any method, including removal, encapsulation, enclosure, repair, or Operations and Maintenance program, that minimizes harm to human health and the environment from the hazards and effects of PACM.
Rhizoid |
Root
Saprobe |
An organism that derives its primary nutrition from decaying carbonaceous matter.
Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) |
Magnification 450-15,000x. Analytical technique used for air and bulk sample analysis. May use Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) to positively identify chemical elements present in the sample. Method involves counting fibers (discriminating between fibers less than and greater than 5.0 microns length) in a known surface area of a filter or bulk material.
SCAQMD |
South Coast Air Quality Management District
Sclerotium |
Tightly bound mass of hyphae. Usually resistant to disruption.
Selective Media |
Medium that encourages selective growth of an organism while attempting to prevent others from growing with it.
Sepsis |
The introduction or presence of disease causing organisms (usually microbial) into the blood or bodily fluids.
Septum |
Division/wall formations in conidia and/or hyphae. Defines cell boundaries.
SGA |
Sabaroud Glucose Agar. Another typical growth medium used in the laboratory for culturing fungi.

A written set of standards, procedures, and materials for the abatement of asbestos. Includes contract documents detailing the Scope of Work of the project and defining Contractor, Building Owner, and Consultant responsibilities.
Spirochaete |
Corkscrew shaped.
Spore Trap (Culturable) |
Method of microbial collection used to culture and later quantify airborne viable spores following microscopic analysis. Does not account for non

Culturable)
Sterile (Hyphae) |
Hyphae lacking or ceasing to produce spores.
STLC |
Soluble Threshold Limit Concentration used in the State of California in conjunction with TTLC to determine lead hazardous waste limits. If the STLC result is equal to or exceeds 5 mg/L the waste is deemed to be hazardous.
Surfactant |
A chemical wetting agent added to water.
Swab Sample |
A technique for collecting microbial specimens using a sterile swab of cotton that can be sealed and either analyzed directly or following culture.
Tape Lift |
A technique for collecting relatively dry fungi by “sticking†or “lifting†the suspected fungus with the adhesive side of clear (not frosted) tape. This can later be transferred to a microscope slide for direct analysis.
Taxa/Taxon/Taxonomic |
The classification and grouping of organisms (living or post
TCLP |
Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure used to determine the federal Resources Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA) lead hazardous waste limits. If the results equal or exceed 5 mg/L the waste is deemed to be hazardous.

Hypha involved in conversion to spore formation.
Total Cell Count |
Cell count that includes both viable and non viable cells.
Toxicity |
The (measured) ability of a substance, organism to be poisonous.
Toxigenic |
Toxin producing. Ex: “Female Blackwidows are toxigenic.â€
Transite |
A trade name for asbestos cement wallboard or pipe.
Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) |
State-of-the-art analytical method for air and bulk sample analysis. Uses high magnification (typically 15,000x) to identify asbestos fibers. May utilize Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) and/or Selected Area Electron Diffraction (SAED) to confirm asbestos and to identify the type of asbestos present. Recommended for final clearance air samples and for bulk analysis of samples with difficult-to-analyze matrices (e.g., plaster, vinyl tile). Provides the most definitive analysis of asbestos currently available.
TTLC |
Total Threshold Limit Concentration used in the State of California in conjunction with STLC to determine lead hazardous waste limits. If the results are equal to or exceeds 1000 mg/kg, the waste is deemed to be hazardous.
Undefined Media |
Medium with an unknown exact chemical makeup, but is experimental, expected, or known to be successful.
USEPA |
United States Environmental Protection Agency.
Vesicle |
A swollen sac; apex of a conidiophore or sporangiophore.
Viable Cell Count |
Average count of cells that are alive and capable of reproducing. Estimation can be done by probability (or Most Probable Manner). Uses dilution or filtration factors of cells to determine growth capability.
